Territorial intelligence is at the heart of investments in nature

Ilona Szabó emphasizes that leveraging territorial intelligence is essential for managing risks and unlocking investments in nature

territorial intelligence

Ilona Szabó, President of the Igarapé Institute and the Green Bridge Facility, recently wrote an article in Folha de S.Paulo about the critical role of territorial intelligence for investments in nature. She notes that even though Brazil has made ambitious commitments to achieve zero deforestation and restore 12 million hectares by 2030, investors remain hesitant, particularly about the Amazon region. Szabó stresses that unlocking the full potential of the bioeconomy depends on proactively managing risks to draw in responsible capital.

According to Ilona, the solution lies in territorial intelligence, which uses data, technology, and partnerships to understand and mitigate risks in specific areas, linking development to community well-being and environmental sustainability. Indeed, the KYT-e platform illustrates that risk and opportunity often coexist, with nearly half of Amazon municipalities classified as “high opportunity” for Nature-based Solutions (NbS). This further underscores the importance of informed, data-driven decisions that foster a win-win relationship between the economy, society, and the planet.
